The Association for Women in Mathematics (AWM) with its twin motives of encouraging women and girls in pursuing their careers and promoting equal opportunity and treatment for them in mathematical sciences was founded in 1971.The Association for Women in Mathematics initiated NSF-AWM Mentoring Travel Grants solely to assist junior women to promote a long-standing in functioning and mentoring relationship with their senior mathematicians.
One of the motives of National Science Foundation (NSF) constituted by Congress in 1971 was the advancement and progress of science and to achieve its objective, it has the provision of funding research and education in areas of science and engineering. As such, Division of Mathematical Sciences (DMS) of the National Science Foundation funds these Mentoring Travel Grants.
Junior mathematicians with this mentoring relationship receive help and support in establishing their research programs and ultimately receiving tenure. AWM awards maximum $5000 as a grant with maximum period of seven years.Under each grant, untenured woman mathematician would be funded expense for travelling, accommodation and other required necessities to travel to a department or institute to undertake research for a period of one month with a particularized individual.
The recipients of NSF-AWM Mentoring Travel Grants can also request for using any unexpended funds to travel again in following year to work with same individual. For such a special case, an applicant has to submit a formal request to the selection committee by the February 1 of the following year, as deadline for application submission is 1st February of every year.
The grant can be used for both domestic and foreign traveling with the condition of using U.S. air carrier for traveling abroad.Eligibility requirements call for only women applicants holding a doctorate or equivalent experience having a work address in the USA and incase of applicant being unemployed, then home address is necessary.
Also, the research by an applicant must be in an area supported by the Division of Mathematical Sciences of the National Science Foundation.Applications are required to be submitted online only. Each awardee is required to submit final report. AWM appoints selection panel comprising of distinguished mathematicians who determine awards on a competitive basis.
